Industrial Biotechnology Program – Curriculum Driven by Industry

The SCC Industrial Biotechnology program was founded in 1997 to support pharmaceutical manufacturing in Solano County.  It was one of first in country to emphasize knowledge and skills required to work in the biotech manufacturing sector. Other colleges taught laboratory techniques to conduct research. Faculty members from 40 states and 5 countries have visited the SCC biotech program to learn curriculum SCC pioneered curriculum for the biotech manufacturing sector.

The curriculum integrates business and regulatory practices with help of local companies. Students learn pharmaceutical industry regulation, Good Manufacturing Practice, and Documentation practices regarding Standard Operating Procedures and Batch Production Records

Students can earn an Industrial Biotech Certificate or Associates Degree, and beginning in the Fall 2017, the SCC will offer a Bachelor’s of Science in Biomanufacturing.  SCC is one of just 15 elite community colleges in California to win the right to offer a Bachelor’s Degree.

SCC biotech graduates have spread throughout biotech companies in San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. Students have advanced into positions in management, quality assurance, quality control, validation, raw materials, automation, supply chain, and training

The industrial biotech program is moving into new 32,000 sq. ft. facility in the Fall of 2017 at the SCC Vacaville Center. The project is funded by voter approved Measure Q. Construction of the biotech and life science building will increased student capacity to respond to local biotech company expansions, all within view of the Vacaville biotech company cluster.
