FACILITY NAMING PROGRAM

Name Recognition for Major Donations

With over $190 million in recent construction projects, now is an excellent time to create a legacy by investing in a building.  The SCC District makes facilities naming available to recognize significant monetary contributions. Naming recognition may also be considered for an individual or a business or organization who has made a significant contribution of time, effort, or service to SCC Solano Community College District.

New and existing facilities may be named in recognition of donors to the College, Education Foundation, or Scholarship Foundation. The name recognition may be provided to an individual, organization, or company that makes a significant monetary or in-kind contribution. The SCC Superintendent-President’s Office and the SCC Educational Foundation publish recommended contributions for specific areas. A financial gift shall not automatically result in the naming of a building or area. The final decision is made by the SCC District Board of Trustees. Below are typical examples of the financial contribution required:

      • Naming of offices and study rooms begins at $2,500.
      • Naming of classrooms and meeting rooms is typically from $10,000 to $100,000.
      • Major spaces and labs or campus areas such as patios, lobbies, sports fields, the bookstore, or cafeteria begins at $100,000 to $250,000.
      • Existing buildings may be named, such as the library or gymnasium on the main campus or other buildings at any SCC location. These require gifts above $1-5M.

Each naming recognition must be consistent with mission and goals of Solano Community College. The District Governing Board must approve the facility name upon a recommendation of the College Superintendent-President in consultation with the SCC Educational Foundation and/or SCC Scholarship Foundation as appropriate.

Please joint in with other donors that chose to donor a important person in their life. Your contribution will make a lasting impact on the next generation of SCC students.

ENDOWED FUNDS

Endowed Funds

One of the most significant ways you can make a lasting impact on the lives of SCC students and the College, is to join a select group of dedicated supporters who have established perpetual endowments. An endowment provides a permanent source of income for a selected College or Foundation program as determined by the donor. The name of the endowment is also determined by the donor.

Principal funds are invested and remain in the endowment. The annual investment income (approximately four percent today) is used to support the designated student scholarship, a College academic department/school, or a specific program at the College or SCCEF. Endowments can be built with additional donations and through investment gains. Once established an endowment may not be dissolved.

An endowment fund can be established for a minimum contribution of $10,000. This amount can be donated upon establishment of the fund, or pledged during a period of up to five years. The funds will be invested and managed by the SCC Educational Foundation’s institutional advisors.

PLANNED GIVING

Planned Giving

If you would like make a lasting impact on Solano Community College and its students, consider the many planned giving options available to you and your family.

Whether you would like to establish a deferred gift today, or leave a bequest that will transfer after your lifetime, there is a charitable plan to fit your needs and philanthropic interests.

Popular Ways to Give

Gifts That Make an Impact After Your Lifetime

      • Wills and Living Trusts. Create a legacy in your will or trust. A donation in your will or living trust, called a bequest, allows you to support our mission without parting with assets today. They are simple to set up, can be changed at any time, and could provide estate tax relief. A charitable bequest is one or two sentences in your will or living trust that leave to SCCEF a specific item, an amount of money, a gift contingent upon certain events or a percentage of your estate. It can clearly identify how specific assets will be distributed after your death.
      • Beneficiary Designation. A beneficiary designation creates a simple yet powerful gift when you name SCCEF as the beneficiary to your retirement plan assets, life insurance or insurance annuities. You can leave other, less-taxed assets to your family and/or change your mind at any time.
      • Retained Life Estate. Leverage a house for your benefit and ours. Did you know that you can donate your house to us, but retain the right to live in it for the rest of your life? You’ll receive an income tax deduction, and avoid the hassle of selling the real estate.

Gifts That Pay You Income

      • Charitable Gift Annuities. Enjoy a lifetime of payments while supporting the College through SCCEF. A charitable gift annuity involves a simple contract between you and SCCEF where you agree to make a gift to the Foundation and we, in return, make fixed annual payments to you, or someone you name, for the rest of your life. Payments are based on your age, and amount and date of the gift. After your lifetime, the remaining balance of your gift supports the College.
Some advantages to a CGA include:

        • A partial charitable deduction, when you itemize
        • Payments for life (starting now or deferred)
        • Capital gains income reportable over your life expectancy
      • Charitable Remainder Trusts. Eliminate potential taxes and enjoy reliable payments. A charitable remainder trust is an arrangement in which assets (cash, stock or real estate) are donated to a charity, but the donor (called the grantor) continues to use the property and/or receive income from it while living. The beneficiaries (you or other named individuals) receive the income and the charity receives the principal after a specified period of time. The grantor avoids any capital gains tax on the donated assets, and also gets an income tax deduction for the fair market value of the remainder interest that the trust earned. In addition, the asset is removed from the estate, reducing subsequent estate taxes. So a charitable remainder trust provides income each year for life (or for a fixed period not exceeding 20 years) from assets you give to the trust. After your lifetime, the remaining balance of your gift will support the College through SCCEF.
Some advantages to a CRT include:

        • A partial charitable deduction, when you itemize
        • Up-front capital gains tax relief
        • Professional management of assets available
        • Future estate tax relief

Other Planned Ways To Give

      • Charitable Lead Trusts. Protect your heirs’ inheritance. If your estate is at a taxable level, a charitable lead trust is a powerful way to pass more to your heirs and make a gift to the College through SCCEF. You can transfer assets, such as cash or stocks to a trust for a set term of years that you choose. Each year, payments are made from the trust to SCCEF. It is called a lead trust because the charity is entitled to the lead (or first) interest in the trust asset, and the noncharitable beneficiary (you, your family or others you designate) receives the remainder (or second-in-line) interest. The longer the length of time, the better the gift tax savings to you. When the term is up, the remaining trust assets go to beneficiaries you select. This is an excellent way to transfer property to family members at a minimal cost. Here’s how it works:
        • You transfer assets into a lead trust
        • The trust pays us for a specified term
        • At the end of the term, the principal passes to your heirs with reduced tax liability
      • Real Estate. A gift of real estate in your will or living trust provides the opportunity to donate a much larger gift than you may be able to give in your lifetime. SCCEF advisors can provide you with simple language to include in your estate documents.
      • Gifts of appreciated property (including real estate) are an excellent way to make a donation to SCCEF that is also beneficial to you during your lifetime. Capital gains tax may be reduced or avoided on property that has significant long-term appreciation. For example, when securities and certain other properties you have owned for more than a year are donated, you may be entitled to a deduction for their full value, not just their original cost. This results in you receiving a tax deduction based on your “paper profits” without having to pay capital gains tax.
A direct donation of real estate to SCCEF also allows the donor to take a full, fair-market value tax deduction. In accepting a gift of real estate, SCCEF must receive a current appraisal of the fair market value of the property and donor’s interest in the property. Within 60 days of the gift the IRS requires a qualified appraisal. It is the SCCEF’s policy to liquidate the property upon transfer of the gift.
      • Donating directly from an IRA (For those 70.5 or older). Congress has made permanent the provision that allowed individuals to donate directly from an IRA to satisfy all or part of a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD). This is an excellent opportunity to fund a scholarship or donate otherwise to Solano Community College and reduce taxable income. Any donation up to $100,000 qualifies. Consult your financial institution and accountant prior to moving ahead with this attractive option.

For advice and assistance in specific cases, the services of an attorney or other professional advisor should be obtained. The purpose of this information is to provide accurate and authoritative information of a general character only. Watch for tax revisions. State laws govern wills, trusts, and charitable gifts made in a contractual agreement. Advice from legal counsel should be sought when considering these types of gifts.
